SEEDS May Rival Prostate Cancer Surgery -
WebMD - USA
One of the largest and longest studies ever undertaken of radioactive "seed" implants for prostate cancer shows that men who undergo the procedure live at least as long, if not longer, than those who opt for surgery, researchers report.
Prostate cancer surgery, on the
other hand, can cause incontinence and impotence.
"There are a lot of advantages to the seed therapy," he tells WebMD. "It's minimally invasive -- no cutting, no suturing. You're discharged two hours later, with no physical restrictions. The procedure is well tolerated."

Voting Poll Topic: Prostate Cancer Treatment Therapy Survey
Two features help a urological doctor determine the likely course of prostate cancer and the best treatment therapy: how far the cancer has spread (if the cancer is confined to a small part of the prostate gland, generally many years will pass before it spreads to areas around the gland and then to bone and other parts of the body) and how malignant the cells look (prostate cancer cells that are more distorted under the microscope tend to grow and spread more quickly).
Treatment Therapy Definitions:
Radiation: High doses of external beam radiation focused at localized cancer.
Brachytherapy : A type of internal radiation therapy in which an implant of radioactive material (Seeds) is placed directly into or near the cancer tumor.
Surgery: Removal of protate gland and cancer tumors.
Surgery and Adjuvant: Treatment after surgery. May be chemotherapy, radiation,or hormonal therapy. Or a combination of all three.
Hormonal therapy: Lowers production of testosterone, androgen deprivation.
Cryosurgery: Uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and kill prostate cancer cells
Chemotherapy: Uses anti-cancer drugs
